‘The Dark Knight’ featuring the late Heath Ledger has gone down in history as one of the most popular Batman movies ever made. And once again Batman has completely knocked out Superman. A 70-year-old Batman comic book sold for more than $1m (£655,000) at an auction, breaking a record set earlier by a Superman comic. This Batman comic book was first sold in 1939 for a mere 10 cents and has now been sold for a whopping $1,075,500 to an anonymous buyer, according to Heritage Auction Galleries. The transaction was conducted by a New York City auction site called ComicConnect.com. Vincent Zurzolo, chief operating officer of Comicconnect.com said, “It’s an exciting week in comic books when you have comics selling for $1 million, amazing indeed.”

Director of operations of Heritage’s comics division Barry Sandoval exclaims in absolute amazement, “It’s the highest price ever raised for a comic book. We can really say that Batman has nosed out Superman, at least for now.” The comic sports a bright yellow background-featuring Batman swinging on a rope above city rooftops. “That cover is one of the most famous of all comic book covers,” adds Sandoval. Heritage Auction Galleries also claims that the seller had managed to grab a copy of this Batman comic book in the late 1960s for $100.

JC Vaughn, associate publisher of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide told The Guardian that, “Most people had predicted it would be the comics with the first appearance of Superman and Batman that broke the $1m barrier.”

George Pantela, owner of GP Analysis, based in Melbourne, Australia, which tracks sales of certified comics from more than 20 auction houses and dealers, said “The previous record set was about $317,000, paid a year ago for a lesser-grade Action Comics No 1 than the Batman comic sold this time.

Sam Tard a comic book enthusiast says, “The release of the Batman movie may have had a huge impact on boosting the popularity of the comic. However I am a Superman fan and am still wondering how anyone could pick Batman over Superman. Superman was after all born with his superpowers and is the real superhero.” While Zak Nay another comic collector counter attacks saying “Batman will always be my favourite superhero because he is human and his powers come from hard work and perseverance, something Superman never had to deal with.”
