The box office set a record this weekend with eight out of its top10 films crossing £1m in revenues.

The animated film Gnomeo & Juliet, led the race with nearly £2.95m in its first week beating the runner-up, The King’s Speech, by nearly a million. The King’s Speech continued to hold onto its second place at the podium with nearly £1.99m in its sixth week.

Disney’s latest venture, Tangled, suffered a big blow to its top line with the release of competing animations like Gnomeo and Yogi Bear. While, Tangled put up a strong fight in the face of tough competition its revenues fell 57% from to £4.57m to £1.97m. It, however, managed to stay above the £1m mark.

The Coen brothers’ True Grit, which made its debut this week, slotted an impressive £1.82m grabbing the number 4 spot. Another newcomer, Just Go With It, starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston also made over £1.63m snagging the sixth place. While titles like Black Swan and The Fighter, which claimed the seventh and eighth openings, saw double-digit dips in their revenues, they too managed to stay about the £1m mark.

Never Let Me Go, which was also a new entrant, opened with an unimpressive£625,000 at number 9.
